What is Ultra FDM?

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is a 3D printing technique in which layer upon layer is printed. Ultra FDM works exactly the same as FDM. The difference is that this technique allows Ultra polymers to be printed.

Polymers are plastics that can withstand extreme conditions. You can think of resistance to heat and flame, extreme weight pressure or chemical liquids. Examples of this type of plastic include Ultem, PEEK and PEKK plastics. In addition, there are many other polymers that we can print with Ultra FDM.

Specs and benefits Ultra FDM

3D printing with Ultra FDM offers some very special advantages. The technique is particularly important when extreme conditions demand a product of exceptional quality. Heat, flames, air pressure, force stress, weather conditions and chemical liquids are examples. This makes Ultra FDM the 3D printing technique of choice for industries such as aerospace, oil exploration, railroads, automotive, marine racing, engineering and chemicals. There is an applicable plastic for every extreme requirement. The table below shows the technical specifications we offer when printing with Ultra FDM.

Description Specifications
Maximum print volume 330x180x180 mm

why choose ultra fdm

Why choose Ultra FDM?

3D printing with the Ultra FDM printer guarantees precision and long durability. Ultra FDM is therefore ideally suited for printing 3D models that must meet high quality requirements and survive in extreme conditions. With Ultra FDM you choose for:

Quality assurance
Thanks to the AARNI Process Monitoring System, 3D printed parts are subject to industry-level quality control. The layer-by-layer inspection during 3D printing ensures that the process is exactly as desired. Watch the video for how this monitoring system works.

Good layer adhesion, low shrinkage and minimal distortion
Thanks to heat control in the print chamber, not only the nozzle, but the entire print chamber is heatable in an Ultra FDM printer. This ensures the correct glass transition temperature. Simply put, this temperature reduces stress in parts so prints will not distort. Also, heat control in the print chamber ensures better layer adhesion, high mechanical strength, low mechanical stress and low shrinkage of polymers.

Precision and stability
So you can be assured of 3D prints with high dimensional accuracy.

FAQs about Ultra FDM printing

What is Ultra FDM printing?

3D printing with Ultra FDM actually works the same as FDM, layer upon layer of material is printed into a finished product. But with the Ultra technique, it is possible to print Ultra polymers. These are high-performance plastics that are resistant to extreme conditions, such as heat, flames, air pressure and chemicals. Examples of these polymers include Ultem, PEEK, PEKK and many others.

Although the technique works the same as FDM, Ultra FDM does require a different printer. In fact, to ensure the high quality and resilience of the final product, additional requirements are also placed on the printer.

For example, it is important that the temperature in the print room can be controlled. And it must be possible to monitor each step in the printing process for quality. These requirements are of course united in the Ultra FDM printer we use.

Have questions about the Ultra FDM process? Feel free to send us a message. And be sure to check out our process for 3D printing with which we always guarantee the highest quality for our customers.

Our working method

What printer is used for Ultra FDM?

To print Ultra FDM, we use the miniFactory Ultra at Vormz. This high-quality printer is the most cost-efficient and versatile industrial 3D printer for printing high-performance polymers. It is one of our favorite printers precisely because the printer is so widely applicable while offering incredibly high quality. Some of the features that make the printer special:

The strong motors in the printer guarantee us perfect precision and stability during printing, giving us exactly the product as a result we had counted on.

Not only is the nozzle (the print head) heated, but the temperature within the entire print chamber is regulated. This constant temperature prevents deformation of the plastics and assures you of a resilient and long-lasting product.

And not unimportantly, to get the print to a perfect end product, the printing process can be closely monitored. Thanks to the built-in Aarni monitoring system in the miniFactory Ultra printer, we are able to monitor every stage of the printing process in detail.

What materials are available for Ultra FDM?

The versatility of applicable materials for Ultra FDM is vast. The commonality is that all these materials are of top quality and show extreme resistance to extreme conditions.

For example, the polymer PEKK-ESD has a heat resistance of up to 150°C.

The ULTEM®️ AM1010F can even handle heat up to 210°C and also has chemical resistance to acids and solvents.

Certified for aircraft parts, the ULTEM®️ AM9085F has ideal resistance to flame, as well as protection against aqueous solutions and alcohol.

PEKK-A is resistant to heat and flames. But is extra special because of its low emission of toxic gases. This makes it a perfect material in fire protection of railroad vehicles.

On this page you will find a table of commonly used materials for Ultra FDM and their specifications. Would you like to know more or are you curious about the applicability of another polymer? Feel free to ask us your question.

How is the quality of Ultra FDM guaranteed?

For 3D objects with extremely high demands, it is important that this quality can be guaranteed. Not only of great importance for the customer, but also at Vormz we find this very important.

To achieve this quality control, the miniFactory Ultra printer is equipped with the Aarni monitoring system. This system allows printed parts to be certified, ensuring quality.

During the printing process, each printing step is monitored, checked and stored. Upon completion, the certificate can be printed out and handed over to the customer.

This certificate highlights the entire printing process. This ensures full traceability of how and with what material your 3D product was manufactured.

What are the maximum 3D print dimensions for Ultra FDM?

The maximum dimensions we can print with Ultra polymers 330x180x180mm.

3D map of an Egyptian temple

Vormz created a 3D map of an Egyptian temple for us, for a new tour created for people with visual impairments. The floor plan allows our guide to explain how a temple was constructed and how the Egyptians used the rooms. The contact was very pleasant and fast and the end result is even better than we had hoped for! We are extremely happy with it.
